Kevin Moloney:  "I’ve written elsewhere that we’re living through a Cambrian Explosion in the ecology of media. [...]  And with this explosion has come a diversity of terms to describe new creations and new arrangements. Multimedia? Crossmedia? Transmedia? What is the difference? I get that question a lot, and it’s a good one."

Jens Peter Madsen's curator insight, April 23, 2014 3:35 AM

Interesting question - More interesting is to study what happens to culture and artistic work when it meets new  media.

I work with the traditional art of storytelling, and study what happens when it´s performed in new digital media.

It is one of those discussions I think best observed from the sidelines, but then I have no financial or artistic stake in that debate. However, I do think they’re important terms to understand."

Funny/cool/informative article about transmedia. I love this idea for teaching Shakespeare (and other complex literary texts) to high school students. Tell the story through a variety of formats.

Brooke Thompson:  "It’s that time of year again… the time when we shake our collective heads and try to have some magical moment where we suddenly all understand what transmedia means. Scratch that. We all understand what transmedia means just fine. This is the time of year when we try to agree on what it means… and, in so doing, prove that the word has meaning and that we understand it more than they do."

The word "transmedia" was hardly to be heard at MIPTV. Does this mean it's dead, or rather fully integrated in TV production?

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

A couple of interesting posts today on the relevance of the term "transmedia".  The first is this one from Simon Staffans, the second is by Andrea Phillips and called WTF Transmedia?  Both are worth the read.

Vanessa Camilleri's curator insight, May 8, 2013 4:21 AM

worth reading! I think we have to avoid building up too much hype on the word transmedia and focus more on what it can actually do and where it can actually lead us.

“Transmedia is a word for old people”

“Transmedia is a word for old people” | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Alisa Rivera:  'As a relative newbie to transmedia, I’ve been feeling psyched about the possibilities, particularly when it comes to storytelling for non-profits. Think of the possibilities for engaging donors and volunteers, bringing organizations’ missions to life in a visceral way.  But when a friend of mine shared my obsession with her 17-year-old daughter, this was her response:“Transmedia is a word for old people.”'

Sadim M.R.'s curator insight, March 31, 2014 3:22 AM

"My friend’s daughter explained that young people don’t need a word to describe transmedia because this is how they live every day. The narrative of their own lives unfolds across different social media platforms and they consciously create identities for themselves depending on where, what, how and with whom they share information."

Justin Nalepa's curator insight, March 31, 2014 11:01 AM

Love the comment posted below the article: "The word represents an attack on the institutional tendency to retain control and ownership of cultural vitality... I think your friend's daughter is absolutely right and only slightly wrong because transmedia is another word for power, and sharing control of culture is not the primary objective of the folks who are presently in control of the definition of transmedia."

Mario Stanzani:  'While the words multi-media and cross-media have always been pretty clear and easy to understand, too many times I’ve heard professionals (even in the marketing and communications field) saying “Yeah, Transmedia, it’s so cool!” and then not being able to explain what that was. Quoting Einstein: “If you can’t explain it to your grandmother then you haven’t understood it.”'

Ken Morrison's comment, October 8, 2013 8:00 PM
I am so happy that you shared this. I shared Nancy Duarte's Hero's Journey one day in the classroom because the internet was down and I couldn't give my regular presentation slides. Ten months later, students still tell me that I "ruin in a good way' their movie watching because they think of this cycle.
