"It's one thing to understand the emotions that compel a person to click. It's another thing entirely to produce them."

Emotion, emotion, emotion....... if it helps stories go viral, then that endorses what advertisers have known for a while.

A key assumption in Jenkin's book, Spreadable Media, is that words matter, that the metaphors we use shape the assumptions we make and thus the actions we take, all the more so in the context of an emerging and still ill-defined phenomenon. Claims today we use words to describe the internet that are not only misleading but damaging. For example he despises the terminology user-generated content. Problem with Web 2.0: It is a business model which seeks to capture and capitalize on the public's desire to participate. In doing so, it has provided some key affordances which have helped to expand the communicative capacities of everyday people, but it has also set restrictions or extracted tolls from their participation in ways which have been highly destructive

In applying this to documentary filmmaking, I think the "Varied Monetization" section to be particularly interesting. As most documentary films don't have a very long or wide release in theatres, exploring other venues for splitting up the rights to your project may prove to be a more successful and lucrative option for most independent filmmakers.

That last 2% takes a tremendous amount of time and resources just to get that to a level that you are satisfied with. We saw it on VGHS for all three seasons. It’s very easy to look at that and say it’s not worth it, but in the end, it is absolutely worth it....hmmmm.

It's odd that in marketing we got so caught up in 'channels', that someone needed to coin the term 'transmedia' to give us the permission to break free. These guys have a shoe string budget and look the world and say 'I've got something good to share with you' or 'you know what would be cool', then they do it. No over-thinking or analysis, they just use whatever they can to share the story, and the story becomes conversation, and everyone has fun.

Image is very good at getting and keep the readers attention. But may distract from data depending how it's used |
Simon Staffans: "We have all heard the value of getting something to a viral stage and the need for either robust strategies for social media or an enormous amount of good luck to make that virality happen – most often a combination of the two is needed."
