UDL Guides Personalized Learning

UDL Guides Personalized Learning | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guides the process to personalize learning using the UDL principles.
Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, June 28, 2013 9:16 PM

The UDL 2.0 Guidelines can assist anyone who plans lessons/units of study or develops curricula (goals, methods, materials, and assessments) to reduce barriers, as well as optimize levels of challenge and support, to meet the needs of all learners from the start. They can also help educators identify the barriers found in existing curricula. You can use the UDL Guidelines to help you determine your learners strengths, interests, and challenges and how they:

> prefer or need to access and process information.

> prefer to express what they know.

> like to engage with the content.

When learners know how they prefer or need to access information, engage with the content, and express what they know and understand, then they take responsibility for their learning.

UDL Principles guide learners to understand how they learn best. They determine how they prefer or need to access information, engage with content, and express what they know.

Reorganise Classroom Layout to Personalize Learning

Kevin McLaughlin has shared a video on how he has redesigned his classroom to support a personalized learning environment.  In an interview with him, he made these comments about how this redesign was key for the learners in his classroom:

"The classroom layout allows my class the freedom to explore their learning in a way that would not be possible if they were grouped by ability and had specified seating arranged for them."

Thank you Kevin in showing us what the first steps can be in personalizing the learning environment and what the benefits are. Read Kevin's blog at www.ictsteps.com

Science Fairs are UDL, Personalized Learning

Science Fairs are UDL, Personalized Learning | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

From Stephen Petrucci's blog, Leadership i Public Education, a connection is made between UDL and Personalized Learning. Here are some of the connections he has made:

"As we continue to search for ways to frame personalized learning in British Columbia, we can point to some practices that have been around for a long time - notably the Science Fair. Rather than pitting the philosophies of revolution vs evolution in our education system, I believe it is crucial to recognize what currently exists as excellent practice in personalized learning. This approach is very much in line with the appreciative inquiry model which encourages a focus on what is going well."

"The Science Fair project is an excellent example of "independent study" - a term we use in describing a personalized learning framework."

"Finally, it is clear to see how well a science fair project fits in the Universal Design for Learning framework through Multiple means of Representation, Multiple means of Action and Expression and Multiple means of Engagement."

UDL and Transforming Learning: Stephen Petrucci

UDL and Transforming Learning: Stephen Petrucci | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

I had the honor of interviewing Stephen Petrucci who is the first British Columbia administrator that discussed UDL in relation to a personalized learning environment.  Stephen shares his vision of personalized learning and what steps have been taken in his schools where he is the Director of Instruction in School District 60 - Fort St. John, BC.

"What is your vision of personalizing learning?

Personalizing learning is education through the eyes and brain of the individual learner. This entails building a relationship with the learner and creating a profile that reveals personal interests, strengths and prior learning, as well as academic needs. It involves determining and getting a learner’s input on how they learn best, using a framework such as UDL to collaboratively design instruction and finally, employing the vehicles of technology and the arts to drive that personal learning forward."

Thank you Stephen, a BC thought leader, for your vision and insight into persoanlized learning!

Recommendations for Providing Accessible Technology for Students to Enhance Personalized Learning | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

"At the International Conference on Assistive Technology and Persons with Disabilities, Microsoft is hosting a panel to discuss a report released by UNESCO entitled "Consultative Accessible ICTs and Personalized Learning for Students with Disabilities."

The UNESCO report outlines practical solutions, such as:

1. Maximize use of accessibility features in current school technology.

2. Support teachers with training, curriculum resources, and accessibility contacts.

3. Consider students’ accessibility needs early in curriculum development.

4. Facilitate students to learn the life skill of personalizing technology.

5. Consider accessibility when planning school technology.

6. Make accessible technology a key consideration for national and regional policies."
