ABR streaming needs 5.1 Surround Sound

ABR streaming needs 5.1 Surround Sound | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

As more Pay TV content is delivered as streaming video to the television, so the requirements for improved audio become more obvious. If operators want consumers to move seamlessly between their broadcast and IP services within their UI environment, like when they are watching VOD on hybrid STBs, they need to avoid a sudden loss of quality from, for example, 5.1 Surround Sound to simple stereo.

Raising the streaming Quality of Experience (QoE) to match that of broadcast delivery encompasses many challenges. We need subtitling and audio description to become the norm, and trick-play functions to match a local PVR for content delivered from the cloud. There are high hopes that improved compression and CDN technologies will deliver broadcast-standard picture quality and reliability at some point.

Nicolas Weil's insight:

Good thing but isn't it a niche market in terms of equipment rate ?

eyeIO's Encoder Gets First-Ever THX Digital Video Certification

eyeIO's Encoder Gets First-Ever THX Digital Video Certification | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

If you've been watching streaming video for as many years as I have, then no doubt you agree that one of the most remarkable changes has been the quality of video delivered. It wasn't that long ago when postage stamp sized windows with audio and video out of synch were the norm, whereas today, we can watch on big screen TVs, with buffering a random occurrence.

But the quality bar is getting even higher as this morning eyeIO ("I-I-O"), an early stage video processing technology company, is announcing it has been awarded THX certification for digital cinema HD video quality, a first for an online video encoder. The certification program objectively tests picture quality using 46 data points in 6 categories that were developed by the major Hollywood studios. A score over 90, on a scale of 100, is viewed as "THX Excellent Quality." eyeIO achieved a score of 95.528 for its H.264 first-generation encoder, when streaming at a rate of 5.8 mbps.

Dolby flies flag of ABR-friendly audio

Dolby flies flag of ABR-friendly audio | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Audio sometimes gets lost in the noise of video technology. But what more quickly degrades a viewer’s quality of experience (QoE) than a voice not synchronized with picture or loudness levels that fluctuate wildly between channels? The bottom line upfront: Pay TV operators neglect audio at the peril of losing both eyes and ears of their customers.

One company that agreed with the need for an efficient solution and went through this process of integrating with Dolby is RGB Networks. The driver from RGB’s perspective was ABR streaming to the set-top box, which has audio requirements higher than second-screen devices.

Ramin Farassat, RGB Vice President of Product Marketing and Business Development, said this recent enhancement of Dolby’s technology allows for stereo to run at a low bit rate, and then as network conditions improve, it jumps to 5.1. “If I were doing it with today’s technology, there’s a break,” he said. “With Dolby, it’s a seamless switch.”

Encoding.com Launches EDC Private Cloud, Targets Premium Content : Dolby Surround, Widevine DRM, UltraViolet

Encoding.com Launches EDC Private Cloud, Targets Premium Content : Dolby Surround, Widevine DRM, UltraViolet | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

With EDC Private Cloud, Jeff Malkin, president of Encoding.com, says his company has solved the problem of premium content, finally bringing cloud encoding to major players. The solution includes fast and secure file ingest and upload (with partner Aspera), high-end processors, and vast storage. One key advantage is EDC Private Cloud's ability to move files quickly: Malkin says it can move files five to six times faster than Amazon can from S3 to EC2.

EDC Private Cloud offers Dolby Surround Sound audio, Widevine DRM, and UltraViolet compatibility.

Besides winning on speed, Malkin asserts that EDC Private Cloud, which uses an automated workflow, also wins on price. In its beta period, he says, it won RFPs with Synacor and Midwest Tape, turning in prices that are 20 percent of current market pricing.

Dolby's Atmos technology gives new meaning to surround sound, death from above

Dolby's Atmos technology gives new meaning to surround sound, death from above | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Apparently, the folks at Dolby Laboratories are no longer content with scaring the bejesus out of moviegoers by simply funneling those horrific audio cues from today's standard theater setup. Instead, the mad audio scientists claim they can recreate a more lifelike and sensory audio experience by pushing sound from even more directions -- a feat made possible by the company's new Dolby Atmos technology. By leveraging up to 64 speaker feeds and 128 simultaneous audio inputs, for example, Dolby says it would be possible to more accurately recreate the sound of creepy footsteps coming from the floorboards of a higher floor.
