Intertrust claims it is now easier to use Marlin than other DRMs

Intertrust claims it is now easier to use Marlin than other DRMs | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The new ExpressPlay content protection solution-as-a-service makes it dramatically easier to implement DRM for Connected TV and multiscreen services, Intertrust, the company behind the solution, claims. ExpressPlay is designed for use with Marlin DRM, the open-standard content protection system, and can be used with existing Marlin-enabled connected TVs and set-top boxes. The market for this service therefore includes HbbTV-based broadcast/broadband services as well as YouView in the UK. Intertrust says ITV and BT both use the ExpressPlay service for their DRM requirements on YouView. A good proportion of the transactions on the Tivù platform in Italy use the ExpressPlay hosted service. Eutelsat KabelKiosk is going to use this cloud-based content protection.

SyncTV to Demonstrate Marlin-enabled HbbTV 1.5 Solution at IBC 2012 [PR]

SyncTV to Demonstrate Marlin-enabled HbbTV 1.5 Solution at IBC 2012 [PR] | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

SyncTV, the leader in delivering television services to the largest set of Internet-connected TVs, mobile devices, and other media-enabled devices, today announced it will showcase a Hybrid Broadcasting TV (HbbTV) 1.5 solution demonstration, in conjunction with Harmonic, at International Broadcasting Convention 2012. SyncTV will showcase a live MPEG-DASH demo and multi-screen solution along with TF1 and MStar at IBC 2012 at the Harmonic booth (1.B20).

The solution uses Marlin DRM with MPEG-DASH adaptive streaming, and feeds off an industry-leading encoder, developed by Harmonic. By combining HbbTV and Marlin DRM, the standards-based over-the-top (OTT) TV solution offers a flexible platform for streaming broadcast content across multiple screens.

Marlin-DRM protected DASH POC : MMSys 2011 Ericsson research paper

Marlin-DRM protected DASH POC : MMSys 2011 Ericsson research paper | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Dynamic adaptive HTTP streaming (DASH) is a new concept for video streaming using consecutive downloads of short video segments. 3GPP has developed the basic DASH standard which is further extended by OIPF and MPEG. In all versions available to date, content protection is not properly enabled. Extensions are needed to enable important use cases like pay-per-view, license change in an ongoing video channel, and pay-per-maximum-quality.

In this publication, Frank Hartung, Sinan Kesici and Daniel Catrein have examined which extensions are needed, in order to use DASH for DRM protected content. This comprises required changes in the DASH standard, namely MPD metadata extensions, as well as changes in the used transport file formats, namely the inclusion of a ISO file format box carrying a segment key, and finally a suitable key and license structure applied to the underlying DASH concept. All those changes have been proposed and explained in the paper. With these changes and additions, which do not change the core idea of DASH, even more complex use cases like pay-per-view and pay-per-maximum-quality are possible. As a proof-of-concept, the authors have implemented the proposed changes and integrated them with a real DRM key and license management system. For the proof-of-concept, they have used Marlin DRM, but any other similar DRM would be equally usable.

TDF launches first end-to-end HbbTV platform

TDF launches first end-to-end HbbTV platform | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

TDF Media Services has announced the launch of the first end-to-end HbbTV platform. This new platform for broadcasters and media companies is able to support any kind of video-based hybrid TV services. Thanks to the HbbTV technologies, it is now possible to enrich a live broadcast stream with additional internet content delivered directly through the TV set.

The platform is compatible with HbbTV1.1 and HbbTV1.5 and supports both Marlin and Microsoft Playready DRMs. It also provides a full end-to-end solution, including metadata management, video processing, content monetisation. Content Delivery Network provided by SmartJog enables a smooth and very high quality video streaming to all connected devices including HbbTV connected TV sets.

Other advanced features have been integrated to enrich the end-user experience, such as a recommendation engine provided by French technology company Cognik, an artificial intelligence engine which selects and proposes relevant content to a specific user.

Will New Standards Rationalize the Industry?

Will New Standards Rationalize the Industry? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
As summer draws to a close and we are all geared up for IBC 2011, a renewed focus on technical and commercial standards has emerged. While non-proprietary security standards may seem counter-intuitive (how can an open standard provide the right level of security to deliver high value content?), there are multiple benefits and clear value associated with a multi-vendor DRM scheme. These benefits have no doubt been amplified by recent progress on the fronts of multiple standards – plus the dramatically expanding landscape of multiple screens ideal for consuming video content.
