What if Netflix switched to P2P for video streaming?

What if Netflix switched to P2P for video streaming? | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Could Netflix change its video streaming service to use a P2P architecture, in order to save money on content delivery and sidestep peering conflicts with ISPs like Comcast?

That’s a possibility raised by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a blog post Thursday, which urged the FCC to make peering part of new net neutrality regulations. ISPs want Netflix to pay for delivering traffic to their customers because the company doesn’t consume as much traffic as it delivers — to which Hastings replied:

“Interestingly, there is one special case where no-fee interconnection is embraced by the big ISPs — when they are connecting among themselves. They argue this is because roughly the same amount of data comes and goes between their networks. But when we ask them if we too would qualify for no-fee interconnect if we changed our service to upload as much data as we download (in other words, moving to peer-to-peer content delivery) — thus filling their upstream networks and nearly doubling our total traffic — there is an uncomfortable silence.”

This brings up an interesting question: Could Netflix actually do that?

BitTorrent to start testing live P2P

BitTorrent to start testing live P2P | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

BitTorrent has just posted a call for broadcast engineers to help with the building of BitTorrent Live.

BitTorrent Live is a new peer-to-peer live streaming protocol. It allows content creators to scale their reach to audiences of millions with near-zero latencies and minimal infrastructure investment.

“Built with users, from scratch, it’s designed to take the principles of the BitTorrent protocol, and apply them to streaming,” according to BitTorrent’s call to broadcasters, “That means: no barriers to broadcast. That means: the more people who tune in, the more resilient your stream. That means: you can share video with a massive audience, in realtime – without bandwidth costs or infrastructure requirements.

BitTorrent Live: Cheap, Real-Time P2P Video Streaming That Will Kill TV

BitTorrent Live: Cheap, Real-Time P2P Video Streaming That Will Kill TV | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Television is going the way of the dinosaur, and the deadly comet is called BitTorrent Live. Today, Bram Cohen, the author of the BitTorrent peer-to-peer sharing protocol, demoed his latest creation at the SF MusicTech Summit.

BitTorrent Live lets any content owner or publisher stream video to millions of people at good quality and with just a few seconds of latency…for free or cheap. Sports, news events, simulcast TV shows, education, video conferencing, or uncensored war zone broadcasts — this technology will power the future of video.

My goal is to kill off television” Cohen said during the SF MusicTech demo session I hosted. Afterwards he explained to me in rhyme, “Television’s physical infrastructure is inevitably going to go away, but TV as a mode of content consumption is here to stay.” Essentially, people love what they see on television, but want it accessible from the web.

The new frontiers of OTT delivery: Multicast, P2P & Hybrid

The new frontiers of OTT delivery: Multicast, P2P & Hybrid | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

4K streaming, mobile broadcasting for the crowd, generalized delinearization, worldwide video events…

OTT delivery is just multiplying the challenges, as customers’ expectations are raising each day in terms of video fast-start, instant channel switching, lack of buffer and high frame size/rate – on all devices in all network conditions. To answer those challenges, OTT delivery answer today is basically more unicast sessions, more servers, more peering – and less and less guarantee of satisfying end-user experience as long as there is no specific end-to-end paid agreement to guarantee that the path will be provisioned from the origin server up to the video device. Even in this ideal scheme, the device might still suffer from poor wireless conditions which jeopardize the experience. So, how do we deal with all this stack of potential problems: do we stick to the aging receipts, rely blindly on Moore’s law and perpetuate a hopeless CDN weapons race? Or do we try to find smarter ways to make the OTT growth reach a sustainable delivery model ?

Adobe’s Secure Real-Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP) submitted to IETF

Adobe’s Secure Real-Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP) submitted to IETF | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Today Michael Thornburgh, Sr. Computer Scientist at Adobe, submitted a specification for Adobe’s Secure Real-Time Media Flow Protocol (RTMFP) to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Internet-Drafts repository ( http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-thornburgh-adobe-rtmfp ;) along with a disclosure of and grant of essential intellectual property rights under royalty-free terms ( https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/1942/ ;).

RTMFP is a low-level endpoint-to-endpoint data transport protocol designed for real-time and peer-to-peer (P2P) communication. It presents a unified and holistic solution to a number of Internet communication problems, including security, NAT traversal, congestion control and prioritization of parallel media and data flows, variable transmission reliability for messages, and IP address mobility.

Sports still drives new distribution models

Sports still drives new distribution models | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Sporting events have long driven innovation in video distribution. It was boxing in the mid-70s (e.g. “The Thrilla’ in Manila”) that introduced large-scale satellite video transmission to the Pay TV industry. More recently, the 2008 Olympics in China was the occasion for the first highly scaled use of adaptive bit rate (ABR) streaming.

Epic TV, owned by Nordic communications service provider Elisa, is an example of the latter. As recently announced, Elisa has built out a 15-country CDN with help of Edgeware to bring its online mix of premium adventure sports video to the European market. What has not been reported is Elisa’s partnership with a global CDN provider to reach even further afield. “We do work with Epic TV,” said Jason Thibeault, Senior Director at Limelight Networks.
