BBC : Making the TV Application Layer Open Source

BBC : Making the TV Application Layer Open Source | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Building for Connected TV is complicated

The TV Application Layer originated from our ambition to run BBC iPlayer, News and Sport applications for Connected TVs on as many different devices as possible.

There are hundreds of different devices in the marketplace and they all use slightly different technology to achieve the same result.

Having figured out how to build an application on a specific device we want to use this knowledge to build additional applications for that device.

Our answer to this challenge is the TV Application Layer (TAL). By abstracting the differences between devices and creating a number of TV-specific graphical building blocks (like carousels, data grids and lists), we provide a platform upon which we can build our applications.

A major contribution in the frontend development area !

Wonderful news!!!

As each new application faced a similar set of device specific challenges, such as media playback, animation or networking, we set about making the TV Application Layer a standalone product that could support our entire Connected TV product needs both now and in the future.

Microsoft Launches Transform Manager

Microsoft Launches Transform Manager | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it
At Streaming Media West 2010 last November, Microsoft launched IIS Media Services 4.0. This HTTP-based media server stack plugs into Internet Information Services (IIS), the web server built into Windows. Unlike traditional streaming servers, IIS Media Services scales out using any HTTP caching server, rather than requiring specific downstream streaming media servers. Today, Microsoft announced it is releasing the beta of a new IIS extension we previously discussed called IIS Transform Manager.

IIS Media Services extensions effectively turn IIS into a media origin server, but because IIS Smooth Streaming can use either IIS caching servers or any other standard HTTP caching servers downstream to scale (rather than requiring specific downstream streaming servers, as traditional streaming servers such as FMS or WMS typically do), the scale-out is not at all locked to any one server solution.

Microsoft sees Transform Manager as an integral part of an Expression Encoder 4 Pro encoding workflow in three areas: converting existing content libraries to other formats, such as Smooth Streaming; constant ingest/ transcode; and converting fragmented MP4 files to Apple HTTP Live Streaming segments for on-demand content delivery.

Motama open-source Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware

Motama open-source Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Traditional client/server streaming consists of two isolated types of applications that do not provide fine-grained control or extensibility. This unnecessarily complicates the design and development of any kind of distributed application.

The Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware (NMM) by Motama overcomes these limitations by enabling access to all resources within the network: Distributed multimedia devices and software components can be transparently controlled and integrated into a common application, which results in completely new “virtual” devices.
