IBC 2013 : chipsets, HEVC et set-top-box

IBC 2013 : chipsets, HEVC et set-top-box | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

HTML5: Between hype and productivity

HTML5: Between hype and productivity | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The appeal of HTML5 remains strong, even as questions about its diffusion and implementation linger. The draw is two-fold: service providers and developers endorse the efficiency gains of a standard; and consumers naturally prefer a seamless viewing experience to one interrupted with plug-in requests.

An underlying driver for HMTL5 among Pay TV operators is cross-device compatibility. During a workshop at Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, Matt Zelesko, SVP of the Converged Technology Group at Time Warner Cable, noted that proprietary set-top boxes were no longer the operator’s only game, but that that embracing a more diverse array of devices while maintaining consistency requires considerable effort.

Electronics Consortium Launches DDB, A New TV Platform With An Integrated Set-Top Box

Electronics Consortium Launches DDB, A New TV Platform With An Integrated Set-Top Box | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The DDB Foundation today launched what it calls "The World's First Digital Entertainment Platform" known as Digital Direct Broadcast (DDB). It claims to offer all the features that current generation Smart TVs offer, and adds in a few of its own. These include an integrated set-top box (STB), better audio-visual experience, superior web browsing, and the ability to convert 2D channels to 3D. The foundation consists of STMicroelectronics, Videocon d2h, Philips, Irdeto, Nivio, Faroudja, and Strata.

DDB-enabled television sets will contain a fully integrated STB, eliminating the need for an external device. A 450 MHz dual-core CPU from STMicroelectronics will take care of the Full-HD video and audio processing. The new platform also offers 14-bit colour processing as against the 10-bit processing that is in common use, thus allowing display of 4 trillion colours instead of 10.6 million. However, we must make it clear that the final display quality will depend on the quality of the panel. There is also a technology that interpolates and constructs missing or dropped frames to make motion appear smooth. As mentioned earlier, DBB has an inbuilt algorithm that can convert 2D live channels to 3D, when the TV is capable of displaying videos in three dimensions, of course.

While DDB technology is already in existence, it will take a few months to actually make it to the consumers. The success of this platform depends on how well the foundation is able to keep the price in check and also on how many big TV manufacturers adopt it.

IBC: Android STB makes it easy to ‘open up’ TV service

IBC: Android STB makes it easy to ‘open up’ TV service | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Android set-top boxes provide a simple and cost-effective way to make popular apps that consumers are used to seeing on tablets and mobiles available on TV. At IBC2011, EchoStar Europe was demonstrating how the Angry Birds game and the IMDb (Internet Movie Database) can be incorporated into a digital TV service, while at the same time demonstrating how a new generation of pure IP set-top boxes, including a Blackberry smartphone sized device, can be used as thin clients in a multi-room architecture.

The HDX-200 shown at IBC was a demonstration platform; the product will be commercialised within the next year. The Android operating system is only one ‘middleware’ option for this device but clearly an interesting one. Android is effectively the middleware, sitting on top of Linux. Mark Goodburn, Director of Marketing and Communications at EchoStar Europe, pointed out that applications developed for the mobile and tablet market can now be made available for the TV without having to rewrite them. And he added: “Some operators have their own applications and are delivering those to smart TVs already, and they also want to deliver them to set-top boxes.”

Yes, software and the cloud could kill the set-top box

Yes, software and the cloud could kill the set-top box | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Most people are aware that their TVs, their gaming consoles, their Blu-Ray players and an assortment of other devices are now able to deliver content from a widening array of services such as Netflix, Hulu or Amazon. From a practical standpoint, this means consumers may find their entertainment centers less cluttered with Rokus, Boxee Boxes or maybe even a dedicated Blu-Ray player. This means consumers can get rid of myriad boxes, but the question is whether or not they will ever see the end of the set top box provided by their cable provider.

SoftAtHome Operating Platform pre-integrated with Broadpeak nanoCDN | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

A collaboration will combine Broadpeak’s nanoCDN with SoftAtHome’s convergent services home operating platforms. The result is that operators can cost-effectively deliver high-quality live OTT video services to millions of simultaneous viewers, consuming only a few megabits per second on the operator’s network, the companies say.

SoftAtHome announced its latest software release SOP5 during IBC2012. SOP5 takes SoftAtHome’s segmented software solutions further in enabling the managed IPTV and OTT adaptive streaming technologies gateway box (gBox) and IP set-top box (ipBox) to be used together. “Operators can now use their traditional IPTV back-end or rely on a unique TV back-end to address retail and managed devices,” the companies explain. These two products have now been pre-integrated.

ActiveVideo Announces General Availability of CloudTV H5; Brings Advanced VOD Navigation to Any STB [PR]

ActiveVideo Announces General Availability of CloudTV H5; Brings Advanced VOD Navigation to Any STB [PR] | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

ActiveVideo Networks, creators of CloudTV, the advanced TV software platform based entirely in the cloud, today announced the general availability of its CloudTV H5 platform that can bring any navigation interface or application written in HTML5 to any digital set-top box or connected CE device.

The scalable and battle-tested CloudTV H5 platform utilizes highly-optimized HTML5 browser technology running in remote servers to execute and render complete user experiences in the cloud. The fully-formed user experience is then streamed to the user's device in a bandwidth-efficient adaptive bit rate video stream. Subscribers control the experience by using their remote controls to send key presses to the remote browser, controlling the application in the same way as they would if it were running locally. Surprisingly, the latency between a customer key press and the UI response is minimal.

ALi supports Opera in its HbbTV STB platform [PR]

ALi supports Opera in its HbbTV STB platform [PR] | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

ALi Corporation today announced that its hybrid broadcast broadband TV (HbbTV) supported STB platform is ready for mass production.

The adoption of HbbTV is spreading in Europe. It is already implemented in retail STBs, connected TVs and other devices such as game players from many leading TV and STB manufacturers. To create an optimal HbbTV experience, ALi and Opera offer a friendly interface to browse web content on TVs for traditional remote controls or their companion devices, as well as robust rendering engines for television with TV rendering (TVR) technology, supporting features such as adapting internet pages to suit TV screens, anti-flicker filtering, picture-in-picture viewing, etc. ALi has pre-ported Opera to its new STB SoC solution, optimizing the Opera Devices Software Development Kit (SDK) for specific middleware, which reduces time to market and development costs.

The Opera Devices SDK uses the most recent version of Opera's rendering engine, Opera Presto, which powers the latest Opera desktop and mobile browsers. The latest version incorporates improvements in CSS, DOM and JavaScript modules. Moreover, the Opera browser uses hardware acceleration, using DirectFB to speed up rendering and animations, providing smoother web browsing experience on hardware limited devices.
