Live streaming every phase of every sporting event of the Olympics is a big task. This year NBC expanded their targeted devices to include iOS, Android and Windows smartphones, PCs, Macs, and tablets. The combination of the increased number of live feeds and the increased number of targeted devices creates a complex live video workflow requiring coordination between a number of technologies and partners.

Cloud-based streaming and production services can be a boon to any large broadcaster, providing scale, power, and features inaccessible from on-premises facilities with minimal capital expenditure (CAPEX) and maintenance expenditures. Microsoft’s IIS Media Services, long a staple in on-premises servers of many broadcasters and large enterprises, has migrated to the cloud and is now available as Windows Azure Media Services. In this article, I’ll discuss the features of the service, how it was proven during the 2012 London Olympics, and the benefits achieved by two early adopters, NBCUniversal and the European Tour (a golf event).

Ericsson recently demonstrated how live UHDTV could be enabled via a next-generation delivery system during the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Production Technology Seminar in Geneva, Switzerland. The demo, focused on interoperability and using Ericsson technology to receive an off-air feed of a 4:2:0 file-based system and receive and decode as 4K UHDTV, showed how high quality fast moving images can be captured for sports and live action broadcasting, which are seen as a key driver for the uptake of UHDTV.

 

Central to both parts of the 4K UHDTV demo was the ‘Simulsync' synchronisation technique, the technology used by Ericsson to accurately synchronise the left and right channels of 3D contribution feeds. In this case, the UHDTV 4Kp25 content feed was split into four 1080p25 quadrants, synchronously encoded into MPEG-4 AVC and transmitted. Four receivers, in phase lock, decoded the received bitstream to reproduce the 4Kp25 content feed.

BBC R&D embeds Xilinx FPGAs into New Stagebox Camera-Back Mount to Support Transmission of Video Over IP | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

BBC R&D and Xilinx, Inc. have demonstrated a prototype camera-back device (Stagebox) at the National Association of Broadcasters Show (NAB) that enables the transport of professional quality video over internet protocol (IP)-based networks. The BBC R&D Stagebox can be attached to the back of any broadcast-quality camera. Due to the integration of more system functionality onto a Xilinx field programmable gate array (FPGA), expensive and cumbersome SDI/audio/talkback and ancillary cabling can be replaced with a single network cable (fiber or Cat6). The small form factor device effectively expands the reach of video networks to remote production sites and studios using IP networks.

A bit more impressions from IBC, Amsterdam. Another hot topic: equipment for mobile broadcasting using wireless networks. It’s some portable device which can be attached to a camera and send audio/video streams to dedicated server installed in broadcasting facility, to CDN etc. The choice is much wider this year; there are a lot of new products. This short review maybe does not include all the solutions shown on IBC, only those of them that I paid attention due some reason and was able to have a closer look.

Adobe, NBCU, Elemental, Deltatre, LiveU, and more are readying streaming platforms that will deliver coverage to desktops and mobile devices around the globe.


Four years ago according to the IOC there was a defining moment in Olympic broadcasting history. Vancouver was the first Winter Games to be fully embraced on digital media platforms where digital coverage accounted for around half of the overall broadcast output.


Globally, on official rights-holding broadcasters’ internet and mobile platforms, there were more than 265 million video views and in excess of 1.2 billion page views during the games. There were also approximately 6,000 hours of 2010 coverage on mobile phone platforms.


Digital coverage from Sochi will surpass this, with many more broadcasters drawing on the clear consumer demand from London 2012 for any time, any device viewing.


The IOC places such draconian restraints on rights holders and anyone working for them to report involvement in the Olympics, which extends to technology contractors, that it's tricky to unearth details on this story. With that caveat, here are some of the large-scale video streaming activities set to go live from Sochi at the end of this week.

IP newsgathering is being put to the test to supplement broadcast coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

 

Video-over-cellular transmission done with systems from LiveU, Dejero and others are assisting a wide variety of broadcasters with reports from the venues and stand-up positions around London.

 

LiveU, along with its exclusive UK partner Garland Partners, has further enhanced its technology for the Olympics using QoS SIM cards. LiveU also is using dedicated network resources, supplied by Broadnet Communications.

 

Dejero and 7th Wave have built out a long-range private Wi-Fi network at 7th Wave's rooftop location overlooking the Olympic Park that to provide broadcasters with coverage across the park and surrounding areas. Using Dejero's LIVE+ mobile transmission products on the private Wi-Fi network, broadcasters have the ability to transmit live video directly into 7th Wave's media center, where it can be uplinked to any destination around the world.

The Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) has released AS-11: MXF for Contribution, supported by Kevin Burrows (pictured), DPP. AS-11 specifies a vendor-neutral subset of the MXF file format to use for delivery of finished programming from programme producers and programme distributors to broadcast stations.


AS-11 joins the growing list of AMWA Application Specifications that provide constrained versions of MXF standards, with the aim of improving interoperability between equipment from different vendors.
