As the battle for the living room heats up, Brightcove bets big on Apple TV

As the battle for the living room heats up, Brightcove bets big on Apple TV | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

"The mythical Apple television set that everyone talks about is already here," said Jeremy Allaire, CEO of Brightcove, sipping an iced cappuccino with The Verge on a particularly hot New York morning. "AirPlay is the trojan horse that has put connected TVs into every household with a iPhone or an iPad."

Today Brightcove announced that its App Cloud platform will create a toolkit to focus on helping media companies create dual-screen apps: programs which use the iPhone or iPad as a remote control while streaming HD video to television sets through an Apple TV. This technology, AirPlay, will soon work with Apple computers as well, provided they are running the newest version of Apple's Mac operating system, Mountain Lion.

TiVo shows off streaming DVR content to iPad with prototype transcoder box

TiVo shows off streaming DVR content to iPad with prototype transcoder box | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

CES 2012 is jam-packed with smart TVs of every size and shape, but you won't find TiVo amongst the fray: the original DVR company is holding quiet meetings in its usual private booth tucked above the show floor. We stopped by a for a visit and were treated to a demonstration of a very interesting external transcoder box that lets you stream anything on your DVR to the TiVo iPad app when you're on your home network, and download shows to watch offline or away from home. The box is just a prototype right now — it might not look like anything like this when it comes out — but TiVo says it'll work on any network fast enough to support the TiVo Premiere's new multiroom streaming feature. In practice, the prototype worked well; we streamed a show from the TiVo across the room without any hiccups.

iPad 2 brings mobile to TV via iOS5

iPad 2 brings mobile to TV via iOS5 | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

In all the excitement of the iPhone 4S launch, with iCloud and the new iOS 5 operating system, Apple quietly introduced a game-changing feature that would be very welcome to almost all mobile TV fans.

Previously, the iPad could send a video to an Apple TV unit using AirPlay, the built-in iOS feature that allows users to stream content from an iPad to an Apple TV. It worked great, although it was somewhat limited. It only worked with a limited number of apps, such as the YouTube app, but it was pretty amazing to sit back and run the show with a mobile device.

The next step was when Apple introduced an HDMI cable for iPad 2. Now you could connect your HDTV and your iPad and show pretty much anything, even cooler.

This past week, Apple stepped it up again to allow AirPlay to now show anything on your iPad on an Apple TV, wirelessly. Think about it: Now over Wi-Fi you can show anything on your iPad to a whole room of viewers. The mobile TV experience can now go broader with just a click.

The State of Streaming Media Protocols 2013

The State of Streaming Media Protocols 2013 | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

It's all about DASH: Adoption is moving at a rapid pace, as industry insiders see a strong need to get DASH implemented in the field in the coming year.

The Pantos spec, as it is known in the industry, is a series of working drafts for HLS submitted by two Apple employees as an information draft for the Internet Engineering Task Force. As of the time of this article, the Pantos spec is currently at informational version 10.

Much has changed between the early versions and the most recent v10 draft, but one constant remains: HLS is based on the MPEG-2 Transport Streams (M2TS), has been in use for almost 2 decades, and is deployed widely for varied broadcast and physical media delivery solutions.

In that time frame, however, little has changed for basic M2TS transport stream capabilities. For instance, M2TS still lacks an integrated solution for digital rights management (DRM). As such, all HLS versions cannot use "plain vanilla" M2TS, and even the modified M2TS used by Apple lacks timed-text or closed-captioning features found in more recent fragmented elementary stream streaming formats.

Yet Apple has been making strides in addressing the shortcomings of both M2TS and the early versions of HLS: In recent drafts, the HLS informational draft allows for the use of elementary streams, which are segmented at the time of demand rather than beforehand. This use of elementary streams means that one Achilles' heel of HLS -- the need to store thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of small segments of long-form streaming content -- is now eliminated.

Google, with its Android mobile operating system platform, has adopted HLS for Android OS 4. Some enterprising companies have even gone back and created HLS playback for earlier versions of Android OS-based devices.

Secure iOS Video Delivery and Playback: DRM Support

Secure iOS Video Delivery and Playback: DRM Support | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

HTTP Live Streaming (HTTP LS) is a protocol strongly recommended and actively promoted by Apple as the best solution for online video delivery to mobile devices. But neither the protocol itself, nor its tools offered by the iOS API, implement a full-fledged DRM support. The new version of Adobe Access 4.0 adds this missing functionality to the iOS-devices.

Adobe Announces Project Primetime Advances, iOS App Support

Adobe Announces Project Primetime Advances, iOS App Support | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

At The Cable Show, Adobe introduces Adobe Media Server 5 (formerly Flash Media Server) and Adobe Access 4. Both include support for native Apple iOS apps.

Adobe chose The Cable Show, currently underway in Boston, Massachusetts, as the setting to make three significant announcements. First, it's adding a component to Project Primetime for seamless ad integration. Announced in late February of this year, Project Primetime is a platform that lets media companies stream video to a landscape of devices, and includes content protection, ad insertion, and analytics. The new component, Primetime Simulcast, lets media companies replace broadcast ads with ads sold for the online market.
