Designed to support next-generation GPU and CPU architectures, release 2.0 is now available for Elemental’s suite of products for video processing, packaging and streaming live and on-demand video. The release brings together a host of features for multiscreen video delivery to create a unified platform providing substantial benefit to Elemental customers:

 

•Increased performance – With next-generation processor architectures and an optimized video pipeline, Elemental systems offerdouble the performance and density of previous generation solutions in asingle RU footprint. Increased throughput allows customers tobring multiscreen assets to market more quickly and in a smaller footprint than ever before.

 

•Comprehensive codec support – Support for multiple codecs running simultaneously on a single platform provides customers with aseamless migration path from existing video delivery standards tofuture compression technologies. Elemental solutions offer MPEG-2,H.264, VC-1 and HEVC / H.265 encoding with patented compression technology as well as support for JPEG 2000 and ProRes mezzanineassets. 

 

•Current and future standards – In addition to support for common video streaming protocols such as Adobe RTMP and HTTP DynamicStreaming (HDS), Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Apple HTTP LiveStreaming (HLS), Elemental software supports newly emergingtechnologies including MPEG-DASH, Ultraviolet and 4K Ultra HD.

 

•Advanced encryption and protection – Secure content with a variety of integrated technologies including Civolution forensic watermarkingfor both live and VOD content, Adobe Flash Access, Apple Sample-AES and Microsoft PlayReady as well as DRM solutions from NDS, Verimatrix and Widevine.

 

•Increased monetization – Support for ESAM dynamic ad insertion and Nielsen ID3 tagging give pay TV operators a path to multiscreenvideo delivery and a way to deepen audience engagement andinteraction. Media companies can also take advantage of the Adobe Primetime ecosystem for ad insertion as well as ad integration solutions from BlackArrow and mDialog.

 

•Augmented audio options – With release 2.0, robust support for audio encoding is available across the Elemental product line, includingsupport for DTS Express, Dolby Digital, Dolby E and Dolby DigitalPlus. In addition, release 2.0 features support for Dolby Digital Plus inApple HLS and Microsoft Smooth Streaming, raising the bar for audio fidelity in the streaming market.

 

•Accessibility features – Audio loudness management lets broadcasters adhere to the CALM Act and new captioning features, includingcaption burn-in, SMPTE-TT and SCC file creation let content creatorsadhere to captioning requirements coming into effect later this year.Elemental makes it easy to caption content originally aired on television and destined for delivery over the Internet.

By incorporating proven audio loudness correction technology used in the Dolby DP600 (pictured), the demonstration showcased how Cerify is able to automatically correct audio content in real time.

It has long been a challenge to achieve consistent sound levels that don't force listeners to readjust their set at every program junction. Today's multichannel world, with playout systems sequencing programs, commercials and trails, means there is no scope for manual adjustment of levels. Instead, volume management policies must be defined. The ITU BS.1770 measurement has been around for a few years and defines an algorithm for loudness measurement. However, it offers no guidance over the values that might offer suitable settings. This challenges manufacturers to keep up with an evolving set of measurement norms by allowing a significant number of user variables. Incorrect setting of these can cause major variations in the values displayed, and a thorough understanding of loudness is necessary to correctly configure a meter so that it gives the required measurements.

Miranda Technologies Inc., a worldwide provider of infrastructure, playout and monitoring systems for the television broadcast, cable, satellite and IPTV industry, today announced the launch of its end-to-end loudness monitoring, logging and correction solutions for both automatic, real-time processing during playout and file-based pre-processing prior to air.

 

First, is the introduction of segment-aware loudness monitoring and logging to the Kaleido series multiviewers and the real-time loudness correction processors. Using Miranda's iControl system, broadcasters can now accurately log the average loudness per segment, enabling easy creation of detailed reports at a later date, thus enabling them to address loudness control regulations around the world, including the Calm Act in the USA.

 

Secondly, because the abundance of content, including most commercials, is now file-based, broadcasters can now monitor and correct content prior to playout, using Miranda's Enterprise Suite.

 

This file-based processing provides effective loudness correction while maintaining the full dynamic range of the original content.

Presently, the audio playback of various streams from different sources causes quite often an annoying experience for the listeners. The reason behind that is that the loudness levels of these different streams can be completely different and do not match a comfortable listening experience on the end users’ devices.

 

Measurements in the past have shown that even similar audio streams which are broadcast via the broadcast network and simultaneously on the Web, e.g. Internet radio services, might have very different loudness levels. Even more different levels can be expected if various streams from completely different sources are collected to form a Rich Media Service.

 

Why was this of interest to NoTube?

 

In the NoTube platform, media coming from different sources are presented to the end user. This brings along a high risk of annoying loudness jumps, among others between news items that are provided by different broadcasters. The use of a loudness module in the NoTube platform could eliminate this effect by normalising the loudness levels.
