Open Source Column: Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP Toolset

Open Source Column: Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP Toolset | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Our open source tool suite consists of several components. On the client-side we provide libdash and the DASH plugin for the VLC media player (also available on Android). Additionally, our suite also includes a JavaScript-based client that utilizes the HTML5 media source extensions of the Google Chrome browser to enable DASH playback.

Furthermore, we provide several server-side tools such as our DASH dataset, consisting of different movie sequences available in different segment lengths as well as bitrates and resolutions. Additionally, we provide a distributed dataset mirrored at different locations across Europe. Our datasets have been encoded using our DASHEncoder, which is a wrapper tool for x264 and MP4Box.

Finally, a DASH online MPD validation service and a DASH implementation over CCN completes our open source tool suite.

Nicolas Weil's insight:

Very nice suite of tools. Kudos to all the Alpen-Adria-Universität team !

First TNT2.0 HbbTV test suite launched

First TNT2.0 HbbTV test suite launched | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Farncombe and Digital TV Labs have announced the launch of a TNT 2.0 test suite for manufacturers launching connected TV devices based on the latest version of the HbbTV 1.5 standard.

As prime contractor, Farncombe has focused on DRM testing, while Digital TV Labs designed the suite of tools to certify HTTP adaptive streaming based on the recently published MPEG-DASH specification. The TNT 2.0 test suites will also enable the validation of Marlin and Microsoft PlayReady DRMs.

Farncombe will offer the DRM test suite alongside its popular security audits, allowing connected TV manufacturers’ DRM implementations to be reviewed to ensure compliance with robustness obligations and an objective set of minimum security requirements.

Digital TV labs CEO, Keith Potter said: “The DASH adaptive streaming specified in HbbTV 1.5 is an important step in improving the perceived quality of video presentation on busy or slow internet connections. We are now able to license the full TNT 2.0 test suite, in conjunction with Ligada iSuite to provide full HbbTV 1.5 support to our clients.”

ANGA: IRT simplifies conformance testing for HbbTV receivers

ANGA: IRT simplifies conformance testing for HbbTV receivers | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The IRT (Institut für Rundfunktechnik) will use ANGA Cable 2012 to highlight its HbbTV Test Harness, which enables and simplifies HbbTV conformance testing of set-top boxes and integrated digital televisions (iDTV). Receiver manufacturers and network operators can easily integrate the testing environment into their custom hardware testing procedure in order to validate all the use cases of the Test Suite. The IRT says the process is efficient and reliable.

With HbbTV Test Harness, the test results are automatically generated for the test reports. They are captured as screen shots by a digital video camera controlled by the HbbTV Test Harness. The HbbTV Test Harness enables receiver manufacturers and network operators to test TV devices against the standard functionalities of the so-called Test Suite of the HbbTV consortium. There are tests to ensure the proper functionality of the ‘Red Button’, for opening HTML pages and ensuring the flawless navigation of HbbTV applications by users, for example.

CableLabs Releases Free Tools For Testing Dynamic VOD Ads

CableLabs Releases Free Tools For Testing Dynamic VOD Ads | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

CableLabs -- hoping to spur the industry's adoption of dynamic video-on-demand advertising -- has released tools under a free open-source license for testing standards-based VOD ad-insertion equipment.

The R&D consortium's Document Profile Architecture (DPA) toolset is designed to let vendors and developers test implementations based on the SCTE-130 set of specifications. SCTE-130 define techniques for the delivery of interactive and targeted ads in cable VOD systems and other on-demand environments.

Essentially, the DPA Toolset lets developers emulate multiplatform architectures for delivering ads across an array of distribution channels, including VOD streams, Web pages and interactive program guides.

DIY BROADCAST : How to build your own TV Channel with Open-Source & other goodies

DIY BROADCAST : How to build your own TV Channel with Open-Source & other goodies | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Here is our scenario : you are the technical director of a web startup, already having proven your talents with your thematic VOD streaming channel – and your boss suddenly thinks you’re a grown enough company to jump on the broadcast wagon and manage your own 24/7 live TV channel, targeting IPTV and multiplatform OTT, with a mix of some live studio shows and mainly pre-recorded programs. And of course readify it for later iTV DTT distribution. Quite an exciting challenge !

But once you passed the wow effect, you just realize that despite his high expectations for the TV channel, your boss has got just a web budget – which is close to 0$ – and of course a tight launch schedule. Therefore, your first duty is to be creative on how to build the platform for the lowest possible cost : that’s why, using your web reflexes, you naturally turn yourself towards the open-source world to achieve this impossible mission. Inexpensive or free closed-source software will eventually fill the gaps (and obviously there are some).

Fortunately, the web attitude has contaminated many industries with its desire to promote interoperability and avoid vendor lock-in with full-IP standard worflows. The BBC has shown the way for a long-time, funding many developments like the Dirac codec for its own needs of tapeless workflows and open-sourcing them quickly afterwards. Other TV channels like SVT from Sweden (with CasparCG) and many independent developers have jumped onboard, and by combining their efforts with your usual web video tools like FFmpeg or other free tools, you can for sure build the target platform.

Apart from this software layer, you’ll just need :
- commodity IT hardware to run all the software
- some inexpensive SDI cards
- the minimalistic general audio/video routing hardware & cables
- a reasonable amount of time to configure and interface all pieces
and of course the right IT/dev skills to bring it all together…

OK, Let’s build it now !
