The State of MPEG-DASH Deployment

The State of MPEG-DASH Deployment | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

MPEG-DASH is slowly but surely becoming the main competitor to HLS, driven by adoption by major players and intrinsic strengths. Here's who's using it now, who's going to be soon, and what challenges still need to be addressed.

Last year at the European Broadasting Union’s BroadThinking conference, the DASH Industry Forum (DASH-IF) conducted a survey of 13 major European broadcasters on MPEG-DASH adoption. At the time, about three-quarters of them projected to have DASH deployed by end of first half of 2014. Primary sources of concern for the broadcasters were the availability of DASH enabled clients and packaging tools. One year later, we haven’t seen many broadcasters deploying DASH in production, but the traction seems to have shifted to over-the-top (OTT) content distributors and operators.

So, who are the actors already in production or close to production with DASH? What are the remaining roadblocks for its adoption? How will DASH be positioned against existing Adaptive Bitrate technologies in the coming months? What is the exact status of the DASH standard and its most promising evolutions? What are the upcoming initiatives aiming at fostering DASH adoption? Let’s get a handle on where DASH is today, and where it’s headed.

Everybody (or nearly) is DASH compliant but when you really want to have it running, it is not exactly as smooth as expected.

Still, it seems to be really starting this time.

EBU BroadThinking 2013 - the state of the art rendezvous for OTT and Hybrid TV // DAY 2 & DEMOS Report

EBU BroadThinking 2013 - the state of the art rendezvous for OTT and Hybrid TV // DAY 2 & DEMOS Report | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Nothing was more welcome after day 1 of EBU BroadThinking 2013 than a good night of sleep, in order to reset the tech hype counters and make some mental room for two new sessions on broadcasters’ CDNs and the latest advances of hybrid platforms. What would be the best broadcasters’ CDN architectures today, what would be their smartest (green) evolutions, would CDN-Federation standards finally bring interop reality over hopes, what would be the most advanced deployments and future of HbbTV, how it compares with YouView in the UK : day 2 agenda was looking quite attractive – and indeed the presentations were packed with valuable informations and experience feedbacks.

So here is the recap of the most interesting DAY 2 presentations and a short report on some insightful demos that were playing on the EBU floor right to the conference.

Nicolas Weil's insight:

Final part of the report : have a good reading & don't forget to attend the event next year !

NAB 2012 OTT Advancements & Doubts

NAB 2012 OTT Advancements & Doubts | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

NAB 2012 closed its doors two weeks ago, so it’s a good time to draw an appraisal on various themes concerning OTT issues, and especially premium OTT issues, that have been handled through industry technology offer during the tradeshow. Here we’ll go from production to distribution and examine the salient NAB facts and products, at least the ones which have a potential influence on OTT workflows evolution in the coming months (or years ?).

Great Scoop.it topic. Question. Would you like to share your scoops on http://www.internetbillboards.net? We are building a community of curators who all use Scoop.it and you would really be great. I think I could create a new category in video for you.

ADB claims to be first to market with a commercial MPEG-DASH implementation

Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) today announced that it is first to market with a commercial MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) implementation, making standardised video delivery via the internet a reality for the first time. The MPEG-DASH implementation, along with a Common Encryption (CENC) scheme using Intertrust Technologies’ Marlin DRM, forms part of ADB’s new, ready-to-deploy OTT solution for video service providers looking for a high quality, standards-based OTT solution.

The first OTT service which uses tivùon! technology is Infinity, from Mediaset, which went live in Italy on December 11th. Customers with existing ADB-powered HD set-top boxes (i-CAN 1850S, 2850ST, 3820T) received an automatic over-the-air software update, adding support for MPEG-DASH and allowing them to enjoy the Infinity service from day one. All new Italian i-CAN HD set-top boxes will feature the new software.

Nicolas Weil's insight:

I worked on the Infinity CDN architecture !

EBU BroadThinking 2013 - the state of the art rendezvous for OTT and Hybrid TV // DAY 1 REPORT

EBU BroadThinking 2013 - the state of the art rendezvous for OTT and Hybrid TV // DAY 1 REPORT | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Geneva in late March doesn’t feel as wild as a Las Vegas boulevard, but still there was a reasonable amount of gaming excitement at the EBU headquarters, where several events were following each other, beginning with a DASH Interoperability Forum meeting which was closely followed by the BroadThinking event, where industry actors and broadcasters come to show off their latest implementations advances and/or share the results of their real-life deployments or research studies. A good way of managing the transition between TV Connect and NAB…

Where Broadcast meets Broadband : that’s the promise of the EBU’s hybrid event which flies between industry competition, standardization efforts and broadcasters’ realpolitik – all wrapped in a warm and funny ambiance provided by the various speakers and the EBU team gently lead by Bram Tullemans whom I’d like to thanks personnally here for the presentation invitation (kudos also to Filka, Peter and Eoghan for the organization!). Actually the 2013 edition was a major success because it allowed the participants to get a rather good idea of the general trends of the industry, and at the same time to go deep in technology when needed, while having opportunities to discover edge tech demos on the lobby attending the conference room.

It’s virtually impossible to render a complete report of everything that has been said or shown there during two days by so many quality speakers (including OnlineVideoFrenchSquad group distinguished members Lionel Bringuier [Elemental Technologies], Martin Boronski [M6 Web], Thierry Fautier [Harmonic] and Nicolas Weil[Challenge2Media] – Les 4 Mousquetaires /poke @sfaure  ), but I’ll nevertheless try to provide you here a selection of relevant informations that will help you grasp the trends and prepare the upcoming tradeshows efficiently…

So let’s start with DAY 1 recap !

Nicolas Weil's insight:

You will find much details about my EBU presentation inside the blog post. Have a good reading !

fMP4 : MP4 File Fragmentation for Broadcast, Mobile and Web Delivery

fMP4 : MP4 File Fragmentation for Broadcast, Mobile and Web Delivery | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Consistent multi-platform audio and video content delivery presents an ongoing challenge for broadcasters. Explosive smartphone and tablet growth on varying operating systems —Android, Apple iOS, or Windows Phone—threatens to create a user-experience divide between users on mobile devices, at the desktop or in the living room.

Tim Siglin's white paper explores fragmented MP4 files (fMP4) and considers whether the fMP4 format can replace legacy file formats.
