An experiment in Japan conducted by broadcaster NHK and a team of medical experts shows how quickly and easily COVID-19 could spread just by touching contaminated surfaces.

The experiment simulated how a person infected with a highly stable virus could infect others in a simulated closed environment like dining in a buffet-style restaurant in a cruise ship. One person was given a fluorescent substance in her palms only visible under UV light, and invited to eat in the buffet area.

The fast spread of the "mock" viral substance was followed through the surfaces touched by the "infected" individual that show up under UV light. Near everyone in the experiment became tainted by the simulated viral inoculum. When appropriate hygiene was not followed, the substance appeared in the hands, faces, noses, mouths, and eyes of most of the participants in the experiment.
