The whole “Internet of things” (IoT) concept gave rise to a thriving community of devices silently talking to one another across the internet. History will remember this as the Cambrian explosion of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. But what is IoT's relationship to M2M? Are both terms to be used interchangeably? Or is M2M just a part of the big picture of IoT?
