Pharma on Twitter: The Few Are Now the Many - Most Outside U.S.

Pharma on Twitter: The Few Are Now the Many - Most Outside U.S. | #eHealthPromotion, #SaluteSocial | Scoop.it

How many?

Looking first to numbers – the numbers have grown even if the strategy may not seem all that apparent. The total number of Twitter feeds in the data base is 335 being run by 69 companies making prescription products – removing those that are aimed at supporting over-the-counter products. Obviously there are some pharma company brands that run multiple feeds. Some run over 20.

How busy?

One of the fields tracked is how often the feed is used and only 201 had “regular” or “daily” updates with another 8 having rare updates. The balance were inactive/dormant accounts. Of the active feeds, the pharmas are following about 190,000 others and being followed by 2.7 million.

What for?

Overwhelmingly the purpose is a corporate one with 141 of the Twitter feeds serving some direct corporate purpose. There are also a fairly large number that have been devoted to the issue of a disease or condition (39 overall, 23 among the active). A few are even dealing in product-specific work to varying degrees.

Where are they?

What may surprise some is that 58 percent of the active Twitter feeds were outside of the United States.

Effectiveness of Social Media in Translating New Research into Clinical Practice

Effectiveness of Social Media in Translating New Research into Clinical Practice | #eHealthPromotion, #SaluteSocial | Scoop.it

BackgroundApproximately 80% of research evidence relevant to clinical practice never reaches the clinicians delivering patient care. A key barrier for the translation of evidence into practice is the limited time and skills clinicians have to find and appraise emerging evidence. Social media may provide a bridge between health researchers and health service providers.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of social media as an educational medium to effectively translate emerging research evidence into clinical practice.

ConclusionsSocial media may be an effective educational medium for improving knowledge of health professionals, fostering their use of research evidence, and changing their clinical behaviors by translating new research evidence into clinical practice.

Educational Paradigms: Learning and Leading in the 21st Century: Twitter Is For Real: The Learning Paradigm has Shifted

Educational Paradigms: Learning and Leading in the 21st Century: Twitter Is For Real: The Learning Paradigm has Shifted | #eHealthPromotion, #SaluteSocial | Scoop.it

Here's a question: Would you decline an opportunity to attend an all-expenses paid education conference that promised sessions and recourses related to your work as an educator? Furthermore, would you decline if the session leaders shared their presentations and resource material?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then you have no need to use Twitter. Because Twitter for educators is exactly that- a FREE, global education conference you have the choice to drop in on 'sessions' and gather resources whenever you want.
Connecting and sharing resources with other educators and communicating/collaborating in real-time conversations (chats) throughout the globe is exactly how Twitter is used by educators.  Evident is a culture of sharing, generosity and gratitude. Whenever "tweet-savvy" educators attend conferences, they share information they are learning in real-time via the conference-issued hashtag. Which means: you can learn along with them from wherever you are (and whenever you want to "tune-in").

Social Media Can Boost Disease Outbreak Monitoring, Study Finds

Monitoring social media websites like Twitter could help health officials and providers identify in real time severe medical outbreaks, allowing them to more efficiently direct resources and curb the spread of disease, according to a San Diego State University studypublished last month in the Journal of Medical Internet Research,Medical News Today reports.

Drew Hodges's curator insight, February 19, 2015 5:50 PM

This is a cool article to show the real life change that social media is creating. Before it was stated that it would take up to two weeks to detect an outbreak of a disease but now with social media it can be done in a day.

This article really shows how social media is becoming a part of our everyday life and is taking on roles that we probably didn't expect it to.

However with the number of users increasing it is important to have tools that help us monitor the large amount of data that is present.

Its no good having all this information if we cannot harness it's true potential, like the one illustrated in this article for disease break out.

Twitter Is Good for the Promotion of Drugs of a Certain Sort

Twitter Is Good for the Promotion of Drugs of a Certain Sort | #eHealthPromotion, #SaluteSocial | Scoop.it

The pharmaceutical world has been flocking to Twitter, just like the rest of the universe, often in an attempt to draw attention to new scientific discoveries aiding in the treatment of disease or to connect with others in their field.

However, Twitter’s popularity has not only benefited the legitimate side of the pharmaceutical industry. A study released in December, supported by both the Global Health Policy Institute and the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmaciesfound an empirical link between all Twitter content and content aimed at the illicit drug sales. A survey of two week’s worth of posts shared on Twitter, involving the analysis of more than two million tweets, turned up 45,000 tweets which encouraged drug abuse. The survey found that more than three-quarters of tweets both pertaining to the non-medical use of prescription medications and including a hyperlink to a sales affiliate related to the anti-anxiety drug Valium.

Chomsky: 'I Don't Look at Twitter Because It Doesn't Tell Me Anything'

Chomsky: 'I Don't Look at Twitter Because It Doesn't Tell Me Anything' | #eHealthPromotion, #SaluteSocial | Scoop.it

This is an interview for Byline, a crowdfunded independent media platform that gives you a personalized newspaper. The platform beta-launched on April 14th. You can read the original interview here.

Seung-yoon Lee is co-founder and CEO of Byline. He was the first East Asian President of the Oxford Union, the world's prestigious debating society, and is a contributing editor to The WorldPost.

Three decades ago, Prof. Noam Chomsky, who is seen by some as the most brilliant and courageous intellectual alive and by others as an anti-U.S. conspiracy theorist, penned his powerful critique of the Western corporate media in his seminal book "Manufacturing Consent," with co-author Edward S. Herman. The book had a profound impact on my perception of the mainstream media in my teenage years, and was crucial in some ways to my decision to start Byline with my co-founder Daniel Tudor. By cutting out the advertiser and political bias of the proprietor, we believed that crowdfunding had the potential to democratize the media landscape and support independent journalism.

In "Manufacturing Consent," Noam Chomsky posits that Western corporate media is structurally bound to "manufacture consent" in the interests of dominant, elite groups in society. With "filters" which determine what gets to become "news" -- including media ownership, advertising, and "flak," he shows how propaganda can pervade the "free" media in an ostensibly democratic Western society through self-censorship. However, lot has changed since then. We now have the Internet. The so-called legacy media organizations which have been "manufacturing consent" according to Chomsky are in massive financial trouble. Has any of his analysis changed? I recently interviewed Noam Chomsky at his MIT office, to find out his views on the current media landscape.

Social Curation with Twitter: a Research Study by NTT

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, February 17, 2014 10:22 AM

From the paper abstract:  "Social media such as microblogs have become so pervasive such that it is now possible to use them as sensors for real-world events and memes.

While much recent research has focused on developing automatic methods for filtering and summarizing these data streams, we explore a different trend called social curation.

In contrast to automatic methods, social curation is characterized as a human-in-the-loop and sometimes crowd-sourced mechanism for exploiting social media as sensors."

The paper attempts to analyze curated microblog data and to understand the main reasons why people "participate in this laborious curation process".

It also looks at "new ways in which information retrieval and machine learning technologies can be used to assist curators" and it also suggests "a novel method based on a learning-to-rank framework that increases the curator's productivity and breadth of perspective by suggests which novel microblogs should be added to the curated content."

The paper contains valuable information for anyone interested in having more statistical data about social curation activities and patterns on Twitter, the use of lists and the typical reasons why individuals want to do this.

Interesting. 7/10
