Why Boon Thau Loo Says Teaching Online is the Opportunity of a Lifetime

Why Boon Thau Loo Says Teaching Online is the Opportunity of a Lifetime | Higher Education Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

“Teaching online allows faculty members to be at the forefront of a revolution in education.”

For context, Boon did not anticipate teaching online when he did. In fact, he often jokes that he ventured into the online space accidentally. When another faculty member slated to develop a core course for the Online Master of Computer and Information Technology (MCIT) realized they would be unable to teach it as planned, Loo assumed the responsibility. That pivotal decision quickly revealed itself to be an opportunity to enhance his pedagogical approach to teaching both online and on-campus.

Lecture Learning?
Peter Mellow's insight:
I don't totally agree with this. When I hear the evolution argument it reminds me of paleo diet people who say we should eat like hunter/collectors & throw out the stoves/ovens. Social learning 100% yes, but the lecture is not mutually exclusive IMHO.

Belief in Learning Styles Myth May Be Detrimental | Higher Education Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Many people, including educators, believe learning styles are set at birth and predict both academic and career success even though there is no scientific evidence to support this common myth.

How to respond to learning-style believers

How to respond to learning-style believers | Higher Education Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Learning styles have been popularized by well-intentioned people, including possibly your professor of instructional design. However, the claim that we have to adapt our design to accommodate different learning styles has been repeatedly debunked by research.

Then why do people cling to the belief? Let’s look at one reason why learning styles are so appealing and how we can respond to the believers on our team.

Grumpy old man. That is at least what he calls himself. But you might know him as Paul Kirschner. He is one of the world's most influential researchers in the field of learning psychology. Currently he is a professor at the Open University of the Netherlands. Although unknown for the vast majority of my Swedish readers, his co-authored book Urban Myths about Learning and Education was recently translated to Swedish.

The New College Degree: In an Unbundled World, Curation is King

The New College Degree: In an Unbundled World, Curation is King | Higher Education Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
In recent months, we have witnessed the success of books and articles predicting massive shifts in the way students will experience and complete post-secondary education. Costs will be reduced and outcomes improved, writers argue, when higher ed is unbundled, meaning students pick and choose from a degree’s component parts. Career advancers, unburdened by general education requirements or a fixed course of study, will acquire skills and badges in real-time. The value of the degree, as a curated set of academic experiences, will diminish.

Reassessing the Value of University Lectures

Reassessing the Value of University Lectures | Higher Education Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Over the past few years the question of whether the lecture is an effective teaching method has been one of the most heatedly debated topics in the field of higher education. While research on the effectiveness of lectures has been carried out since at least the 1960s, the value of the lecture has been increasingly questioned recently for a number of reasons that include waning lecture attendance rates by students, the heightened emphases on active learning and interactive modes of teaching, and technological advances that allow for the instructional component of lectures to be delivered online.
