Effect of Avoidance on Peanut Allergy after Early Peanut Consumption — NEJM | Immunopathology & Immunotherapy | Scoop.it
Original Article from The New England Journal of Medicine — Effect of Avoidance on Peanut Allergy after Early Peanut Consumption
Alfredo Corell's insight:

CONCLUSIONS

Among children at high risk for allergy in whom peanuts had been introduced in the first year of life and continued until 5 years of age, a 12-month period of peanut avoidance was not associated with an increase in the prevalence of peanut allergy. Longer-term effects are not known.

Stanford Researchers Go for the Cure of Food Allergies|

Stanford Researchers Go for the Cure of Food Allergies| | Immunopathology & Immunotherapy | Scoop.it

I don’t have to tell readers of this website about the heartbreak and anxiety of food allergies. The Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford houses the Stanford Alliance for Food Allergy Research (SAFAR) the only research center on the West Coast conducting oral immunotherapy (OIT) trials, often in concert with other centers east of the Rockies. We are the focal point for the hopes of thousands of children and families for relief from this evolutionary mistake, this maladaptation, in which the body’s own immune system turns against us. My colleagues and I take these hopes very seriously.

Experts strongly discourage the practice of food-specific IgG testing (CSACI)

The Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (CSACI) is very concerned about the increased marketing of food-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) testing towards the general public over the past few years, supposedly as a simple means by which to identify “food sensitivity”, food intolerance or food allergies. In the past, this unvalidated form of testing was usually offered by alternative or complementary health providers, but has now become more widely available with direct-to-consumer marketing through a nationwide chain of pharmacies.

The diagnosis of food allergy: protocol for a systematic review | Allergy, Asthma and Immunology

The diagnosis of food allergy: protocol for a systematic review | Allergy, Asthma and Immunology | Immunopathology & Immunotherapy | Scoop.it
Alfredo Corell's curator insight, June 30, 2013 2:24 PM

The literature on diagnostic tests for food allergy currently lacks clear consensus regarding the accuracy and safety of different investigative approaches. The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology is in the process of developing its Guideline for Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis, and this systematic review is one of seven inter-linked evidence syntheses that are being undertaken in order to provide a state-of-the-art synopsis of the current evidence base in relation to epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and clinical management, and impact on quality of life, which will be used to inform the formulation of clinical recommendations. The aim of this systematic review will be to assess the diagnostic accuracy of tests aimed at supporting the clinical diagnosis of IgE-mediated food allergy.
