Democratic Republic of the Congo: Reducing Poverty, Preventing Conflict, Protecting the Rainforest

Democratic Republic of the Congo is vast, with abundant resources. But persistent conflict, a growing population, and slow economic growth have caused living standards to decline. Most Congolese lived on less than $2 a day. The World Bank Group is redefining its engagement through a new Country Partnership Framework for 2022-2026 focused on reducing poverty, preventing conflict, and protecting the rainforest.

Graham Watson's insight:

This World Bank clip provides an interesting case study of a developing economy: the Democratic Republic of Congo, where development has been impeded by conflict, population growth and the resource curse.

However, the World Bank is looking to help the government redefine its social contract, focusing on poverty reduction, protecting the nation's rainforests and developing transport infrastructure.

Price of gold: DRC’s rich soil bears few riches for its miners – photo essay | Global development | The Guardian

Price of gold: DRC’s rich soil bears few riches for its miners – photo essay | Global development | The Guardian | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
As the value of gold reached new heights last year, those mining it continued to face crippling deprivation and dangerous conditions
Graham Watson's insight:

I've 'scooped' this not so much for the theory but because it could make for an excellent starter activity: can students identify all the economic issues illustrated in this photo essay about gold mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

There are so many things that merit attention: from elasticities, to development, to externalities, to development and lots of areas for discussion, developing the notion of 'value added' and miners' pay, workers' rights, and questions about fairness in society.

How Millions of China Cash Flowed to Congo's Former First Family

A leak of 3.5 million documents revealed how a Chinese-run company moved millions of dollars to former Congo President Joseph Kabila’s family and allies.

Graham Watson's insight:

A remarkable insight into how some Chinese mining companies have operated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, funnelling cash to the President and his cronies, via the Congolese banking sector. It highlights how corruption in a developing economy can adversely affect the development prospects of a country, and highlights the need for institutional development, the rule of law and respect for property rights. It also serves to underscore the natural resource curse.
