At last G20 is showing how to finance an assault on poverty | Larry Elliott | The Guardian

At last G20 is showing how to finance an assault on poverty | Larry Elliott | The Guardian | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
Brazilian president Lula’s proposals have the backing of the World Bank. Now we need action
Graham Watson's insight:

Larry Elliott argues that the G20 are showing signs of committing to tackling extreme poverty in the years ahead, arguing that poverty reduction is going to require both public and private sector investment, with the former crowding in the latter.

However, without a concerted effort to improve infrastructure and improve public finances in developing economies and go some way to getting closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. At present, we're going to fall well short in relation to both extreme poverty and zero hunger.

Tackling the Global Water Crisis

On the eve of the first United Nations Water Conference in over 40 years, global leaders lay out why proper management of water is so essential to the future of our planet and all who live on it.

The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. The Forum engages the foremost political, business, cultural and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas. We believe that progress happens by bringing together people from all walks of life who have the drive and the influence to make positive change.

Graham Watson's insight:

I've already 'scooped' about this issue on the Microeconomic board, but this World Economic Forum clip rather shifts the focus, away from the issue of scarcity, towards the central role that fresh water plays in fostering development.

These vox pops highlight the many different roles for water, and its importance to the planet. It's also interesting to note that we are falling short of meeting those water-related Sustainable Development goals.

However, like my earlier scoop, the clip also highlights the role of proper pricing and property rights in ensuring that water is allocated efficiently.

The Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All

The Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All brings together 13 multilateral health, development and humanitarian agencies to better support countries to accelerate progress towards the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Together, the agencies work to advance all the SDG 3 targets and collectively, they channel around one-third of development assistance for health annually. Under the Global Action Plan, the agencies are better aligning their ways of working to reduce inefficiencies and provide more streamlined support to countries.

Graham Watson's insight:

Another World Bank clip, this time looking at the World Bank's Global Action Plan for Healthy Living, to address the current health emergency but also to enhance the prospects for a resilient and healthy recovery.

Universal Health Coverage - how are we doing?

Find out more about how the world is doing with key findings on UHC progress from The Global Monitoring Report 2019. There is progress…but too slow: while service coverage progresses, it is too often at the cost of more health spending supported by households.

Graham Watson's insight:

This WHO clip looks at how far we've moved towards the SDG goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage, with the WHO Global Monitoring Report charting how much progress there's been.

The position is that there's been some progress but there needs to be mean better and more efficient domestic funding and better targeted aid.

Graham Watson's insight:

Primary health care for universal health coverage: Getting back on track to the health-related SDGs

The Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All (SDG3 GAP) is a platform that improves collaboration among 13 multilateral agencies in support of countries’ progress towards the health-related sustainable development goals (SDGs). Through its focus on primary health care, the collaboration is key to accelerating progress towards universal health coverage and other health SDG targets.

Graham Watson's insight:

This WHO clip highlights the fact that the UN looks like it is going to miss one of its health-related Sustainable Development Goals, in providing access to Universal Health Care, especially primary health care.

In some senses, given the pandemic, this isn't surprising - however, a number of forces are look to reinvigorate this campaign, improving healthcare and developmental outcomes going forward.

Using data to accelerate progress towards the health SDGs, leaving no-one behind

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a devastating setback to the health-related sustainable development goals (SDGs). The use of data for the delivery and implementation of sustainable solutions to end the pandemic and ensure an equitable and resilient recovery towards the health-related SDGs in countries, is being supported by WHO and multilateral partners, including through collaboration under the Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All.

Graham Watson's insight:

The pandemic has setback the achievement of health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). And what is worse, inequality has risen, with only 14% of all vaccinations taking place in low and middle income countries who account for 46% of the world's population.

The World Health Organization are trying to halt this two-speed approach, focusing on how to better use data to promote Universal Health Coverage.

The entrepreneur creating Ghana's next generation of inventors

The entrepreneur creating Ghana's next generation of inventors | International Economics: IB Economics | Scoop.it
Charles Ofori Antimpem is the inventor of a science set which is the size and price of a textbook which he now hopes to share with children across Africa.
Graham Watson's insight:

A Ghanaian entrepreneur has started selling an electronics kit which he hopes will revolutionise STEM teaching in Africa, and encourage more children to become scientists.

It highlights how important education is to development. Without more scientists, Africa is unlikely to meet its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) regarding sanitation and access to clean water.
