[Infographic] Evolving SEO tactics: longer posts, Google+ and the tilde

From leaderswest.com

This is an infographic about current SEO thinking with tips and tools to help sites rank better on search engines.

Most people have a general idea of how to optimize their content for search engines. That search engine algorithms are proprietary and evolving inevitably causes different opinions on SEO. Of course there’s another school of thought that minimal keyword research and a green-light from a SEO plugin are enough to publish a piece.

This infographic challenges writers and some of the preconceived notions about SEO. It has a mixture of tips and tools to help you rank better in search...

Great comment MizWalidah. I wold modify one point. Instead of "continually optimizing your meta keywords and tags" I would find ways to ping in fresh content such as User Generated Content from reviews or comments. Once a website I've SEOed is inside of Google's algorithm changing meta values that matter (mostly the page's title) can HURT SEO. I change titles VERY VERY carefully since the first rule of SEO is DO NO DAMAGE. The QDF (Quality Deserves Freshness) movement post Panda and Penguin LOVES it when a page pings, so I love the 1% of visitors who are willing to comment, review or otherwise contribute User Generated Content.

I DON'T play with meta nearly as much as you imply since to do so can look SPAMMY and cause real harm. The most important idea is creating content other people want to share. This is why I love GAMES and CONTESTS especially for bands. High engagement content such as Contests and Games can help with SEO and they can help create a distinct brand all bands need. Appreciate your enthusiasm, but be careful about meta (especially title) changes. Marty

How Marketers Are Using Paid Social Media, New Research | Social Media Examiner

From www.socialmediaexaminer.com

This research shows marketers are increasing budgets and using social media in conjunction with other forms of advertising to stay in front of consumers.
Ally Greer:

Paid social media advertising is no joke. Not only are marketers increasing their spending in this area, but they're even taking money away from other budgets to make more money available for social ads.

The combination of free social tools like Twitter and Facebook and social ad spend is the winning strategy to reach your customers where they are spending most of their time.

Your Brand Is WEAK: Make It Strong With These 27 Social Media Exercises

From lorirtaylor.com

You know your brand is underperforming on social media, but what can you do about it?

Ally Greer:

This is a long but incredibly informative article on some of the best ways to get your brand's social media presence up and running. I would recommend taking a look at it whether you're just starting out, or are a social media veteran - there's always something new to be learned.

Some of my key takeaways include:

B2C companies who blog generate 88% more leads than those who don't.

This is hardly news, but it is a cool statistic to back up the claims we've been hearing over the last year or so that it's becoming all about content. Don't have time to blog? How about trying curation? *wink.*

Find your niche.

Somewhat of another cliche, yet often forgotten. You don't have to start off being everywhere. Think about what you do best, and focus on that. Then, you can expand.

"Whatever you sell, whether it's plumbing or round-the-world trips, you're helping people fulfill dreams."

Be inspiring to your customers! Cheesy as it can be, it works. People love feeling emotions.

BE VISUAL!

-Users are more likely to engage with brands who post photos over any other media.

-Photos on Facebook generate 53% more likes than the average post.

-Over 80% of Pinterest pins are repins.

How @HomeDepot Successfully Hammers Out Social Media Marketing

From www.business2community.com

“Break it down – Stop, Hammer time!”

Although MC Hammer’s classic tune isn’t exactly Home Depot’s theme song, for these purposes it may as well be. After analyzing the brand’s social success, we broke down the contributing components by way of marketing factors and social networks. In between online marketing, of course, they have to stop for – you got it, hammer time.

The world’s largest home improvement retailer has been around since 1979 – long before Google! Through the years, they have not only effectively transitioned into the Internet-era, but learned how to thrive. Home Depot’s strong focus on customer service has likely aided their social adoption: more ways to reach and serve customers means higher customer satisfaction and increased visibility.

Home Depot is well-known for building, painting, storage, décor and tools – hammers included – and now they can add social media to the list. They are successful in social media marketing for several reasons. They maintain an incredibly active social presence, regularly engage their audience, capitalize on timely events and add value. They also create original content on their blog, “The Apron.”

Twitter Is The New CNN | MediaPost

From www.mediapost.com

Twitter is a frenemy," said Jeff Zucker, CNN's new president, as reported by MediaShift. Jeff Zucker was describing the cable news network's relationship with social media and added, “the network uses, relies on -- and is scared by -- social media.” Twitter had a marquee moment last week, particularly late Friday afternoon and evening, that should scare most television news outlets in the business of reporting breaking news. That’s when Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was cornered by police, trapped and almost bleeding to death inside a covered boat in a backyard in Watertown, Mass....

Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com's curator insight, April 24, 2013 9:21 AM
From the article -
  • Immediacy. Without following any special sources, my standard Twitter connections reported and retweeted major developments seconds after they happened -- either by being on the ground, scanning police airwaves, or passing along updates from trusted sources. The discussion on Twitter typically was ahead of the major news sources.
  • Context. News outlets will argue that they provide editing, filtering and fact-checking value. That may be true, but so does the crowd and the public as it scrutinizes developments and facts. In fact, the conventional news sources become one of many participants in the ongoing analysis, not the referee of it.
  • Pragmatism. I underscore pragmatism because my Twitter experience was more information-based than TV, with raw, intelligent commentary from real, diverse people. Facts tended to be facts, and perspectives were to the point -- unlike the mindless banter and filler commentary that accompanies most live television coverage of unfolding news events.
  • Sophistication. Unlike television, Twitter is less susceptible to repeat playback of violent imagery. Do we need to see the explosions and blood spraying across the sidewalks over and over again? Similarly, Twitter is less susceptible to replays of b-roll and stock footage that don’t add any value when there is no news at that second. You have to actively select video you want to watch, so you can avoid being held hostage to it.
  • Community. Television is a powerful medium because it can hold your attention and captivate your imagination, and make you feel part of a shared experience -- something we all yearn for in times of crisis. But Twitter does an equally good job of this, in my opinion.
  • Accessibility. Twitter is not always more accessible than television, but the signals are more digestible and require less bandwidth. In my case, riding home on a train last Friday evening, without a terrestrial radio, it was the only practical way to pick the news in real time. It was also more accessible once back at my home, where I wanted to keep up with the events but shield my five- and six-year-old kids from serious drama and sensationalism.

Interesting tidbits:

Time spend on Facebook has decreased in the last year, while time spent on Google Plus has almost doubled, and time spent on Pinterest has increased by one thousand percent.

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, March 29, 2013 6:20 PM

Big Data Means UNDERSTANDING is The Game Now
If your C level is still not sold on social media they risk being two moves back. Social media generates an army of BIG DATA that, once squeezed into silos with the top and bottom of the sales funnel connected, the possibility to speed conversions and sale traffic, list growth and money is HUGE.

There is helpful myth busting stats on this infographic. The problem, in a nutshell, understands how social media is impacting your Key Performance Indicators in a positive or negative way. There is no neutral in this game.

Every Internet marketing move you make helps or hurts your traffic, conversions and online brands. It is important to understand norms and benchmarks. This graphic provides norms and benchmarks. Once you know those you can go forth and know how you are the same or different.
