What Needs to Change About the Current State of Blogging

What Needs to Change About the Current State of Blogging | Social media publishing and curation | Scoop.it
Is this current writing model of leaning on gif-listicles, quizzes, and Instagram photos as the bulk of blogging content the most sustainable in the long-term?
Ally Greer's insight:

Are you blogging just to have things to publish on social media, or because you have important things to share with your readers?

If it's the former, you might want to rethink your strategy. Blogging just for the sake of blogging can get ugly pretty quickly - making viral headlines and "keywordifying" your content just to get some SEO and social media visibility isn't the way to form real relationships and get business.

Instead of blogging just to blog, why not blog when you have meaningful, important ideas that matter to share, and supplement the rest with curated content?

Debbie Elicksen 's curator insight, March 21, 2014 1:10 PM

What a great point. Let's have something interesting and valuable to share -- even if it's just an entertaining meme -- rather than post shit for the sake of posting it.

The 10 Best Social Media Predictions for 2014

The 10 Best Social Media Predictions for 2014 | Social media publishing and curation | Scoop.it
In my years in marketing and media relations, I’ve learned there is one constant: change. If you can’t embrace it, you will wither on the vine.
Guillaume Decugis's insight:

This is not one of the boring "social media will become more important than ever" type of post: promised! The question is no longer there but how social media will evolve in the next few months.

Interestingly a lot of these points are on the format of content that will be successful next year: short-form, visual and interest-based are the keywords you want to remember.

Ten Reasons to Leverage Social Media to Grow Your Medical Practice

Ten Reasons to Leverage Social Media to Grow Your Medical Practice | Social media publishing and curation | Scoop.it

1. Social media is here to stay. Studies show that 18 percent of all time spent online is spent on social media; some studies report one in five minutes a day! You need to be there, in front of people, as this is a huge opportunity and the medical field as a whole supports jumping on this form of marketing.

2. New patient acquisition is the biggest hurdle for most clinics. Social media is the most cost-effective and targeted way to reach your prospective patients.

3. Social media helps you build relationships. Whether with current patients and their families or prospective new patients, social media makes it easy to stay in the forefront of their minds, by lending yourself to becoming a resource. Having a large social media base can even help you to assess adding particular services or products.

4. Everyone loves Facebook. A number of reports state that Facebook is the most influential social network with the most diverse user base. Use a personal page to promote your clinic and healthcare providers. Personal pages are more prominent in news feeds and give more opportunity to interact with your fans, i.e. wishing them "Happy Birthday." (It is also important to have a business page (aka a "fan page") for the practice for SEO purposes.)

5. Images of office life are the most important pieces of the social media DISCUSSION. People buy from people, not nameless, faceless, soulless businesses. Posting images and pictures of day-to-day life even on a clinic page is key to building a sense of community around your brand.

6. Social media influences search engine rankings. And having great search engine rankings improves your chances of being found when Betty types into Google "family practice in XYZ city."

7. Social media is the new "search engine." Many people look to social media to find the places and services they are looking for.

8. Social media offers the most highly targeted marketing opportunities. Less than a decade ago, if you wanted customers you might have to advertise on the radio or send out mailers. Today, reaching the specific prospective patient you are looking for is simple. You can drill down and target people down to their age, gender, geography, and interests.

9. Social media gives you more insight into your patients. By seeing which social media outlets are garnering the most "likes" or discussion feedback on healthcare issues (for example, links to important articles on timely material such as the benefits of the flu vaccine) you can get insight into your patients' worlds. Also: You cannot do it all, so once you have this information, pick two to three social media outlets where your ideal patients hang out, and be great at utilizing those.

10. There are people out there to help. For example, our company has a "Teach You to Fish" Program and a "Fish for You" Program to help you develop you social media marketing strategies for your practice.

Paid Facebook Reach: Does it really help? | Social media publishing and curation | Scoop.it

To continue sharing some of the learning-by-doing lessons I've come across over the past two years as a community and social media manager, I looked into the world of Facebook Insights to learn a little more about the often debated Facebook Reach and see what it's actually done to help me.

Ally Greer's insight:

I've found that paying for higher Facebook Reach hasn't really resulted in anything. It's a common misconception of marketers that a higher reach means higher success, but I'm not quite sure what success it actually brings to businesses when lots of people are seeing their social media posts as opposed to clicking them and making purchases.

Ally Greer's insight:

It's no secret that images work. Twitter is taking that into consideration with the supposed next iteration of its design - which frankly has a lot of the elements of the Facebook profile, including the large banner.

I've always said that, eventually, all of the social networks will learn from the others what works and what doesn't, adapt and reuse all of the features, and just form one giant social empire. Maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't, but this is certainly another step in that direction. :)

Also, long live images! #leancontent

Jon Koob's curator insight, February 19, 2014 1:01 PM

Oh the times, they are a changin'.

Twitter is becoming more like Facebook day after day, and the newest changes to their web layout are going to be all too noticeable.  You'll now be responsible for a header that's much larger; and make sure your color schemes are on point or your profile WILL look trashy. You'll be able to see live stats of your favorites and a few other things you didn't get to previously.

The change is necessary, and it'll most likely be scrutinized until people realize they have no choice anyway.

B2B Social Media Curation: Tips and Tricks

What is social media curation? Social media curation is: Gathering and repurposing content from sources outside of your business to improve and diversify your social media marketing.

Ally Greer's insight:

Great intro and tips to social media curation by Brainrider Knowledge Marketing Group.

Nicole Paquet's curator insight, February 20, 2014 11:18 AM

Personally, I would highly recommend this article for anyone interested in social media. I found it to be extremely helpful with its suggested tips on how to properly curate articles and how to go about doing so in an ethical manner. I think that it is important for businesses to be looking into what else is going on in their industry aside from themselves and to be open to discuss those changes with their consumers. By posting other articles from creditable sources, companies have the brilliant opportunity to look more like experts in the field themselves even for just keeping up with current ideas and innovations. Aside from this, it also lets businesses provide their followers with their own take on what is going on in the world. For their customers, curating makes it much more exciting to follow businesses. When companies are not so focused on using social media to push products, they can instead use these forums to be able to express themselves as a “real people” with actual personalities. People who are interested in their business have a great chance of also being very intrigued by other topics or subject matter that is relatable or are in some ways similar. Something to take away from this is the idea that social media should not be used to push products and services on people but rather another median to be able to connect and interact with consumers. By doing so, businesses are able to gain a better insight on what it is their customers are actually looking for and what are some things that they may need to change. It may be time-consuming, but in the end I truly believe that social media is an extremely powerful tool to be used in order to enhance a business in a relatively low cost manner.

Why Content Curation is the Ultimate Compliment to the Creator

Why Content Curation is the Ultimate Compliment to the Creator | Social media publishing and curation | Scoop.it
Before today, imitation was the greatest form of flattery. If your idea was good enough to be copied, then you were golden. But now, with the state of the web in our lives, this balance is shifting.
Ally Greer's insight:

As a creator, the greatest compliment to receive should be to have your content curated into a collection of the web's best content on a specific subject (namely, the one you're creating content about).

As a curator, the ultimate compliment to give is to properly share and cite all of the content you've created, add your insight while giving due credit to the creator and presenting their content in a meaningful way.

Integrating with LinkedIn Company Pages – the Untapped Opportunity for SMBs (Study Results) | Social media publishing and curation | Scoop.it
Several studies have shown that small and mid-size businesses massively use social media as a digital marketing tactic. But at Scoop.it we wanted to take it a step further: how do small and mid-sized businesses use social media?
Ally Greer's insight:

While 67% of SMBs see LinkedIn Company Pages as an important channel for social and digital marketing, the average LinkedIn company page has not been updated in over three months, according to a study conducted by Scoop.it

Starting today, LinkedIn Company Pages are now a sharing option on Scoop.it, allowing Scoop.it users to share their curated content directly to their LinkedIn Company Page along with their other social channels.

This is great news for social media managers and LinkedIn Company Page admins who can't find the time to post content on their Company Pages, as well as analytists and strategists who are disappointed with the lack of analytics that LinkedIn provides for Company Pages. With Scoop.it, the posts from your LinkedIn Company Page will be added to your Scoop.it and Google Analytics should you choose to connect them.

Rise Above the Content Marketing Noise

Rise Above the Content Marketing Noise | Social media publishing and curation | Scoop.it
Aberdeen reports that 91% of B2B marketers use content marketing, but are they using it effectively?
Ally Greer's insight:

The fact that there is such a concept of "rising above the noise" in content marketing proves that there is simply too much content out there. There are thousands of blog posts published every hour of every day on the same exact topc - so how is it that marketers are supposed to stand out?

The best advice is to "create quality, original content," but does anyone actually not try to create quality content when they're aiming for results? Probably not. The fact of the matter is, there is even more quality content out there than we ever could have expected - and this is where the curation door opens.

Instead of trying hopelessly to rise above the noise with all original content, why not be the one to organize it for your audience?
